How to Rewire Your Brain: The Science of Mindset Shifts and Lasting Change

Nov 19, 2024

Have you ever tried to change a habit or shift your mindset, only to feel like you’re fighting an uphill battle? It’s not because you’re stuck or incapable—it’s because your brain is wired for patterns, and changing those patterns takes intention and understanding.

Let’s explore how the brain works and why new ways of thinking can become second nature with a little time and effort.

Your Brain: A Master of Adaptation
Every time you think a thought, make a decision, or act in a certain way, your brain forms a connection between neurons—tiny bridges that carry information. When you repeat that thought or action, the connection strengthens, like walking the same trail in a forest until it becomes a well-worn path.

But here’s the exciting part: your brain doesn’t stop there. With enough repetition, it starts reinforcing these pathways by laying down more myelin, a substance that insulates the neural connections. Myelin works like adding lanes to a highway, making the signal travel faster and more efficiently.

The result? What started as a conscious effort becomes automatic. Your new thought pattern or habit becomes your brain’s preferred route. The ability for new connections in the brain to form is called neuroplasticity - it allows us to adapt to new experiences and challenges and we can do this intentionally!

The Link Between Mindset Shifts and Motor Skills
This process of forming and reinforcing neural pathways isn’t unique to mindset changes—it’s the same process your brain uses when learning a new motor skill.

Think about the first time you tried to ride a bike. At first, every movement felt awkward and deliberate. You had to think about balancing, pedalling, and steering all at once. But as you practiced, your brain built stronger connections, and eventually, it became effortless.

Changing your mindset works the same way. At first, practicing self-compassion, reframing negative thoughts, or setting boundaries might feel unfamiliar or even uncomfortable. But as you repeat these actions, your brain reinforces the pathways, making them second nature over time. We can continue to learn new skills at any age, and while we develop an enormous amount of new skills from birth to age 5-7, the brain is not fully matured and developed until around the age of 25. But this ability to create new pathways (neuroplasticity) continues on throughout life.

As a physiotherapist for over 40 years, I have taught clients new motor patterns with exercises, gait training, rehabilitation following joint replacement surgery, amputations, strokes and more. The physical and mental potential lying within each client is amazing and for me, it has always been valuable to work on both aspects to achieve the best results.

How to Start Building New Neural Pathways
If you’re ready to shift your mindset or adopt new habits, here’s how to get started:

1. Be Intentional. Identify the thoughts or behaviours you want to change and replace them with something new. For example, instead of saying, “I can’t do this,” try, “I’m learning and growing with each step.” or "I can't do this, yet." There is an enormous amount of power in this three letter word!

2.Practice Consistently. The more you engage in your new way of thinking or acting, the stronger those neural connections will become. Even small, daily efforts can create big changes over time.

3. Celebrate Progress. Just like learning a skill, mindset shifts take time. Acknowledge every small victory along the way—it’s all part of the process.

When to Seek Support
Sometimes, breaking old patterns and building new ones can feel daunting, especially if you’ve been stuck in the same mindset for years. That’s where having the right support can make all the difference.

As a results coach, I can help you identify the thought patterns that are keeping you stuck, provide tools to create new ones, and guide you as you turn those shifts into lasting change.
